Seachtain na Gaeilge 5 - 17 March

Tá Seachtain na Gaeilge ar siúl anois ón 5 -17 Márta 2012.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is a two week celebration of Irish language and culture and there will be various events on around the country to celebrate - see the Seachtain na Gaeilge website for details of what's on. There will be informal conversation cafes on around the campus, at 11.00am Wednesday in the Coffee Dock and 11.00am Thursday in Starbucks, so whatever level of Irish you have, now's the time to use it! If you think you might need some help, a source in the know recommends Colloquial Irish: the complete course for beginners. Once you have your cupla focail you may want to browse our collection of books in the Irish language. Go n-éirí an bóthar libh!

Rag Week Opening Hours

The Library will be open as usual during Rag Week starting 5th March, that is Monday - Thursday 8.30am - 9pm, Friday 8.30am - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 4pm.

The power points in the floor of the Library for plugging in laptops have been turned off by the Estates Office because of concerns over their safety. There are still power units on the walls of the Library and we will also be installing some additional points in the PC areas. The current plan is to have the floor sockets restored during the summer: if you want this to happen, let us know via the suggestions box or the Issue Desk or by replying to this post.

"There is a problem with this website's security certificate"

If you're trying to access one of the databases or other catalogue services, and you're getting the message "There is a problem with this website's security certificate", click on the option to "proceed to this website" - it may appear differently depending on what browser you're using. This should get you access. The message is appearing due to a technical issue which will hopefully be resolved by next Thursday 2nd March. Ring us at 042 9370310 if you're still having problems.

British Standards offline

The database British Standards will be temporarily inaccessible from tomorrow Saturday 25th February until next Tuesday 28th February, for technical reasons. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. You can still access some standards via IHS.

Academy awards 2012 et al

The Academy Awards will be held this Sunday 26th February. Previous winners include Crash, Casablanca and the Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King all of which are available to borrow from the library. Nominated films that didn’t win like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Ed Wood are also available to borrow, which is where the fun starts: you decide! Should Little Miss Sunshine have won instead of the Departed in 2006? Should Brokeback Mountain have won instead of Crash? Borrow them and find out. Best of luck as well to the Irish film Pentecost nominated in the live action shorts category.

Canvas in the Library

Calling all artists and anyone who’s ever wanted to make their mark in paint on Library walls. There will be a new canvas on the wall outside the Avoca Room in the Library, opposite the Information Desk, from this Monday 20th February. The canvas last term was a great success and the resulting visual extravaganza warmed our hearts through the cold winter months thanks to everyone who took the time to add to it. The theme of the new canvas will be ‘Renewal’, so come along, grab a brush, and make yourself immortal.

We close on Saturday.

Library Opening Hours over Christmas and New Year

This week the Library opens as usual from 8.30am to 9.00pm Monday to Thursday and from 8.30am to 5.00pm on Friday. We are closed on Saturday.

Next week, from Monday 19th December, the Library opens from 9.00am to 5.00pm, and closes at 12 noon on Friday 23rd for the Christmas break.

We reopen on Wednesday 4th January, when normal opening hours resume (ie 8.30am to 9.00pm Monday to Thursday etc as above, and on Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm) until after exams finish.

We wish all our readers a happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Help us improve our customer service; let us know what you think of our e-books and other resources. Do we have enough books in your subject area? Or indeed anything else you want to let us know about.

If something has happened to you in the library, or there’s something you think we could do better, we want to know about it. You have the option to enter your details if you want the librarian to get back to you, or you can leave that section blank. Drop the form back to us at one of the library desks, or into one of the suggestion boxes.

October Bank Holiday Weekend

The Library is closed on Saturday 29th and Monday 31st October for the bank holiday weekend. Items issued from our Short Loan Collection from Friday onwards will be issued until Wednesday October 2nd.

For your assignments you may get quotes and ideas from sources such as books and journals. It's important to acknowledge where you got this material from. This is called referencing and is a fundamental part of academic writing.

DkIT Library has created a booklet 'Credit where credit is due' which shows you how to reference sources for your assignment and avoid plagiarism.

To make things easier for you when referencing, the library has drop in sessions for EndNoteWeb. EndNoteWeb is an online tool which allows you to save and store references and add them to your bibliography. Click here to view details of upcoming drop in sessions.

New Adventures in Wi-Fi

There’s a new wireless network on campus. Students and staff should choose wireless.dkit.ie from the list of networks available. You’ll need your DkIT username and password to log in. Computer Services provide instructions on how to connect the different operating systems (Windows 7, XP, Linux etc) to the network.The good news is that you only have to go through the process once – after that it should be a single sign on, and it’s a more secure wireless connection than before. If you have any problems you can contact the Computer Services helpdesk online, ring them at 042 93 70300 (extension 2300), or go to their office at room E122, past the Coffee Dock in the North Building.

Is it about a centenary? 100 Years of Flann O'Brien

October 5th marks 100 years since the birth of Irish writer Flann O’Brien. His novel At Swim Two Birds won James Joyce’s praise (“a really funny book”), while The Third Policeman made an appearance on the TV show Lost. Celebrations are planned over the next few days, including readings and performances tomorrow in Bewley’s Café Theatre in Dublin at 7pm and 9pm. Trinity College is to host a conference weekend, Flann100, from October 14th to 15th. And look out for the film version of At Swim Two Birds, Brendan Gleeson’s directorial debut, which is due to appear next year. Find out about more events on Facebook.

Library e-changes

You've probably noticed by now that there have been some changes to online library services, so this is a quick run-through of the new features. As always, if you need help using these or any other library resources, come to us at the Issue or Information Desk, and you'll hopefully go away feeling a lot more informed.

First of all the Library Catalogue has a new look. It’s simpler to use and you can try it out here: http://dkitlibs.dkit.ie/.

We are launching our new unified search discovery service called
Summon, which is basically a one-search option for (almost) all our resources. Summon searches the Library Catalogue, our e-book collection, and most of our online journal articles. You can search Summon at http://dkit.summon.serialssolutions.com/.
